Most sleep apps stream recordings, so they need a connection and they end after a fixed number of hours. Nightlong has no recordings. It generates its sound mathematically, live on your device, sample by sample. There is no file, so there is nothing to download and nothing to run out of. Press play and it keeps going until you press stop, through the whole night and past it.

Noise colours

• White. Flat and even, the strongest masker
• Pink. Balanced hiss, the usual first choice
• Brown. Deep and rumbling, soft on the ear
• Green. Mid-forward, like open air
• Blue. Bright, often used for tinnitus
• Violet. Brightest, covers high ringing
• Grey. Shaped to sound flat to the ear

• Ocean. Slow rolling surf
