Word games that teach English
Betty & Emyak help children learn English by playing.
This is not one exercise repeated in new colours. It is a whole school in an app: a library of illustrated story books, an arcade of word games, every English tense, grammar, idioms, real conversations, a pronunciation lab, culture notes and a daily lesson — and every single line of it read aloud in a clear British voice. A child can open it every day for months without meeting the same screen twice.
No ads. No accounts. No sign-up. Nothing is collected, and the app has no internet permission at all — it cannot send anything anywhere, whatever any privacy policy says.
WHAT IS INSIDE
• Hundreds of words with pictures, meanings and British pronunciation
• A library of illustrated story books, each one read aloud
• Culture notes: how people actually greet, thank and celebrate
• Grammar practice across nouns, verbs, articles, adjectives, pronouns and prepositions
• Every English tense, each with its own exercises
• Idioms and the expressions people actually use
• Real-life conversations: at the doctor, at a restaurant, at the airport
• Pronunciation lab with minimal pairs, tongue twisters and a sound-hunting game
• A whole arcade of word games, plus quizzes and a daily five-minute lesson
GAMES THAT TEACH, NOT GAMES WITH A LESSON BOLTED ON
The Games Hub is a shelf of proper arcade games, and English is how you play them rather than a quiz between rounds. Fly a spaceship and shoot the word that matches the picture. Beat the computer at air hockey by sending the right word into the goal. Hunt words through a maze, match three in Word Cascade, spot the odd one out, find the difference. Children come back for the games and leave knowing the words.
EVERY WORD IS SPOKEN
Every line in the app is recorded and shipped inside it, in a clear British voice. Your child hears the same voice whether or not the phone has a text-to-speech engine installed — a common reason other apps are silent on a phone set to another language.
BUILT FOR A CHILD, NOT A TESTER
Big buttons. No timers that punish. No streak your child can lose overnight. Wrong answers explain themselves instead of just going red.
FOR PARENTS
A parent area behind a press-and-hold gate shows real progress — words practised, words mastered, day streak — calculated from what your child actually did. Back up and restore progress as plain text, because there is no cloud to lose it in.
WORKS ON A PLANE
Everything is inside the app. No connection is needed at any point.
FREE, AND WHAT PREMIUM ADDS
The app is free to download, and a large part of it is free for good: every game, the daily lesson, the word and flashcard drills, Speak!, the quizzes, the stickers, progress tracking, the first 10 stories and the first 5 illustrated story books.
Premium is one payment, not a subscription - nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel. It unlocks the other 50 stories, the other 25 illustrated story books, all twelve English tenses, the grammar engine, the pronunciation lab and the conversation practice.
