Features & Capabilities

You say a word out loud. Mimora answers sound by sound: which one drifted, in which direction, and what your tongue or lips should do. Not one overall grade — the exact spot.

SIX LANGUAGES, AND WHAT IS INSIDE English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese. The first three carry a contrast programme for every first language. German, Italian and Portuguese are built for French speakers; elsewhere they open with the alphabet, the Lightning Challenge, Diction and per-phoneme grading — their contrasts are coming.

THE LANGUAGE YOU ALREADY SPEAK PICKS YOUR DRILLS What trips up a French speaker is not what trips up a Japanese one. Minimal pairs — two words that differ by a single sound — are in the language you are learning; your first language decides which ones. Thirteen slots: French, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, German, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Hindi, plus "English / other" for the rest; the interface speaks all thirteen.

THE EAR FIRST, NO MICROPHONE Two near-identical words appear, one of them is played: which did you hear? The voice changes every round, on purpose. You cannot produce a contrast you do not yet hear. Silent, works anywhere.

A GRADE FOR EVERY SOUND Then you say it. An on-device acoustic model lines up what you said against the phonetic transcription of the word and grades each sound — not "fine / not fine", but the exact sound to go back to.

SEE AND HEAR THE GAP An animated cross-section shows the tongue leaving rest for the target position — the inside of the mouth, never shown. Lips too, with no camera. For vowels, your formants are plotted on the vowel chart, between the target and the sound you substitute instead. Then the Mirror lays your voice over the teacher's: the gap becomes audible, melody and rhythm included. A full-sentence workshop exists for English and Spanish.

ABOUT THE TEACHER VOICE, PLAINLY Not a studio recording: a system synthetic voice, taken at the best quality on your device, varied every round on purpose — install a Premium voice in iOS and the teacher improves. What Mimora measures is therefore not a timbre but phonetic precision: the distance to the target written in the International Phonetic Alphabet.

THE ALPHABET OF THE LANGUAGE YOU ARE LEARNING Not an A-to-Z recital: the letter that does not sound the way it does at home — the Spanish j, the German ch, the Portuguese ão, the Italian double consonants. Real sound, example word, what makes it odd, for all six.

IF YOU ARE LEARNING ENGLISH Three extra workshops. Breath measures whether you truly aspirate p, t, k and h. Word Stress checks which syllable you stressed. Plus frequent words, sorted by difficult sound.

YOUR OWN LANGUAGE TOO Diction works on speaking well out loud — reading, melody, tongue twisters, linking — in your mother tongue or in the one you are learning: all six. The Crescendo holds one target sound from the word up to the paragraph, under rising load, and tells you where your automatism gives way.

SPACED REPETITION, AND THE WRIST A shaky sound comes back soon, a solid one drifts further away: the app decides when, you just repeat. The Apple Watch companion carries the ear training and your streak.

EVERYTHING STAYS ON YOUR DEVICE The engine that grades you ships inside the app: it all works in airplane mode the first time you open it. Your voice goes to no server — even the Diction transcription is forced offline. No account, no ads. The camera is never used: Mimora listens to you, it does not look at you.

SUBSCRIPTION Five new lessons a day, per language, for free. The rest opens with a yearly subscription; the App Store shows the price in your own currency before you pay.

AN HONEST LIMIT Mimora does not teach grammar, translates nothing, hands out no certificate: it works on pronunciation and nothing else. And no app replaces speaking with people: Mimora prepares you for it.
