Binoculars steps the zoom up to 25x, holds the picture steady, and lets you freeze a frame and pinch into it — for a bird on a far branch, a stage from the back row, a street sign, a boat on the horizon, the number on a distant door.

HOW THE ZOOM WORKS Your iPhone switches lenses on its own as the zoom climbs, so the first part of the range is optical on any phone with a telephoto camera and the rest is a digital crop. The app stops at 25x, which is where a hand-held picture stops being worth looking at.

NIGHT MODE, HONESTLY It turns on the camera's low-light boost and pushes the exposure two stops. It brightens a dim scene. It is not night vision and it will not show you anything in the dark.

COMMON QUESTIONS Is this a real telescope? No. It is your phone's camera, zoomed, with a steady hand and a freeze frame to help. Above the telephoto lens it is cropping pixels, and it looks like it.

Why does it stop at 25x? Because past that a hand-held picture is mush. The cap is the app's, not the phone's.

Does it need internet? No. Everything runs on the device and there is no account.

Does it record video? No. It takes stills and freezes frames.

Why are my saved photos smaller than the camera's? On the free plan they are resized to 1600 px on the long side. Pro saves them untouched.
