EIGHT WAYS TO BE STRANDED • Rising Creek — the canyon floods a little more each day, and the low routes go first • Lost Lake Forest — a canoe trip gone wrong; find the old road or light a signal fire • Dry Wash — 42°C, no water in the riverbed, a ranch patrol that comes on day eight • Black Mire — cold swamp where fires die and nothing is safe to drink • Tide Island — an hour to walk around, far off the shipping lane, one way off • Burnt Range — three weeks after the fire; a survey crew is coming, make them see you • Frost Ridge — a crash site above the treeline, −12°C at night, one wind pass out • Highland Mine — 4,000 m up, with a ventilation shaft to the surface if you can find it

DECISIONS, NOT REFLEXES Every action tells you what it costs and what it might return. Gather firewood: 42 minutes, −60 calories, likely to succeed. Scout the high ground: 90 minutes, uncertain, may turn up a map fragment. Nothing is hidden from you except luck.

SIX THINGS TRYING TO KILL YOU Condition, hydration, body heat, stamina, calories, rest. They pull against each other — the fire that keeps you warm costs the daylight you needed for water.

PACK LIGHT Choose a handful of items before you start, inside an 8 kg budget. A fur wrap is the warmest thing you can carry and it weighs almost two kilos. That trade-off is the whole game in one choice.
