Bedtime classics, read aloud
Complete, unabridged classics — Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Grimm, Poe — read aloud until you fall asleep. No account, no ads, no tracking. The whole shelf works offline.
Nightshelf is a bedtime reader, not a soundboard. Every book is the real, unabridged text of a work in the public domain, narrated a chapter at a time, with a sleep timer that fades out instead of stopping dead.
The whole shelf, installed with the app
Dracula, Treasure Island, Sherlock Holmes, Grimm's fairy tales, Poe, Alice, Aesop and more — all on your phone the moment you install. No downloads, no streaming, no connection required. A starter shelf is free to read for good; Nightshelf Pro opens the rest.
Six narrators, or the voice you already have
Read aloud by the on-device narrator with nothing leaving your phone and no connection needed, or switch to one of six cloud narrators — Nova, Alloy, Fable, Onyx, Echo, Shimmer — when you want something warmer. The cloud six are AI voices, and they need a connection.
A sleep timer that fades
Set it and drift. Narration fades out rather than cutting off, and your place is saved to the paragraph, so you can pick up wherever you lost the thread.
Ambient sound
Rain, wind and quiet room tone underneath the reading, mixed to taste.
Tonight's Story
Ask for a story — a lighthouse in a storm, a slow train through snow — and AI writes one for you and reads it aloud, with a cover painted to match. A few fresh stories a night, then the limit resets until tomorrow. This and the six cloud narrators are the parts that need a connection; everything else works with the network off.
Your place follows you
Progress syncs through your own private iCloud storage. There is no Nightshelf account, no sign-in, and no copy of your progress or settings on our servers.
Genuinely private
No account. No sign-in. No analytics SDK, no third-party tracker, no advertising. Your reading progress and settings stay on your device and sync only through your own private iCloud storage. The on-device narrator speaks every word on the phone — nothing leaves it while it is reading. Two features send your words off the phone, and Nightshelf asks before either runs. With a cloud narrator playing, the paragraph on screen is sent away to be turned into audio — a paragraph from a bundled book exactly as much as from a story you asked for. Tonight's Story sends the setting, tone and length you picked plus anything you typed. Both travel through Nightshelf's own server, hosted for us by Fly.io, and on to OpenAI for audio and covers or Anthropic for the writing. Nothing carries your name or email, because there is none to carry. Say no and no page and nothing you typed is sent; the whole shelf still reads aloud in the on-device voice. The one thing outside that permission is the ▶ narrator audition, which sends a fixed sample sentence built into the app and nothing of yours. The privacy policy sets out the rest, including what our server keeps.
Nightshelf Pro opens the rest of the shelf and the six cloud narrators, adds Tonight's Story and sleep timers past an hour, monthly or annual. A starter shelf, the on-device narrator, the sleep timer and the ambient sounds stay free, with no account and no ads.
