Excavation diary & GNSS survey
Giornale di Scavo is the digital replacement for the paper excavation diary. It is built for one thing: letting you document an archaeological dig quickly, in the field, with no signal and no server.
THE DIARY WRITES ITSELF
The excavation diary is the heart of the app. Every day is a page, and everything you record during that day — notes, weather, attendance and hours, survey points, drawings, photographs — is collected onto it automatically. Nothing has to be copied over twice.
THE WEATHER WRITES ITSELF
One tap and the day records the conditions at the excavation, right then: sky, temperature, wind and rain when they matter. The data comes from the Norwegian meteorological institute; only the area's position leaves the device, rounded to about 11 metres. In reports the line comes out in the report's language, not the one you wrote it in.
CENTIMETRE-LEVEL SURVEY
Record points with a single tap, with automatic numbering. The app reads the built-in GPS, MFi receivers such as Emlid Reach RX or Bad Elf, and generic Bluetooth NMEA receivers. NTRIP support brings RTK corrections in over the internet and forwards them to your receiver, so you can work at centimetre accuracy without a second radio. Both ellipsoidal and orthometric heights are stored, and antenna height is subtracted for you.
CONTROL POINTS
Enter known control points by hand, import them from CSV, or materialise them from your current RTK position. A dedicated check screen shows live ΔNorth / ΔEast / ΔHeight deviations and 2D distance, and keeps a history so you can monitor stability over the course of the dig.
MAPS, DRAWINGS AND PHOTOS
See your points on standard, satellite or hybrid basemaps, with overlayable WMS layers. Draw with Apple Pencil or your finger, optionally over a photo taken on the spot and used as a tracing sheet, and add text labels on top. Photographs are geotagged automatically with the current GNSS position.
DICTATE INSTEAD OF TYPING
Write the diary by voice while your hands are dirty. Transcription runs entirely on the device — nothing is sent anywhere, and it keeps up even when you pause to think.
REPORTS THAT ARE READY TO HAND IN
Generate daily, weekly, monthly and final reports as PDF or Word (DOCX), with your logo and letterhead, photographs and drawings included. Export survey points as CSV, or as GeoJSON to open straight in QGIS. Report language is chosen independently of the interface, so you can hand in Italian to the heritage authority while using the app in English.
YOUR DATA STAYS YOURS
No account, no cloud, no tracking. Everything lives on your device, and you decide what leaves it. Whole sites can be exported and re-imported as a single ZIP archive.
FREE AND PRO
Free includes one site, internal and MFi GNSS, the daily report, CSV export, report languages and voice dictation. Pro unlocks unlimited sites, Bluetooth NMEA receivers and NTRIP, every report type, PDF without watermark, DOCX with logo and photos, and GeoJSON export.
Pro is available as a monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription, or as a one-off lifetime purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; you can manage or cancel them in your Apple Account settings at any time.
