Fretride is made by one person who plays guitar, for people who play at home. Every sound in it was recorded string by string, and nothing you play leaves your phone.

Pick a key and the fretboard lights up with the notes that belong in it. Build progressions, jam over them, play the neck with your hands, and turn what you played into tabs.

THE FRETBOARD • Every key and scale, picked on a circle of fifths that shows each key's sharps and its neighbours • Notes coloured by scale degree; show note names, degrees or both • See any chord as a real shape, anywhere on the neck • Alternate tunings: Drop D, DADGAD, Open G and others

A NECK YOU CAN PLAY A full-screen guitar under your fingers. The neck sinks in faster when you can hear what your hand is on. • Any chord in any key, standard shape or your own voicing, and a wheel that slides it along the neck as it sounds • Swipe across the strings and the chord follows your finger, note by note, in the direction you moved • Solo over the progression as it plays, with the CAGED shapes lit so the notes worth landing on are visible • Record what you played straight into a tab

HEAR WHAT YOU ACTUALLY PLAYED Plug in through an audio interface, play a tab, and the app listens to your guitar and tells you how it went. • Timing and notes measured against what is written, with bends, slides and mutes heard as techniques rather than mistakes • Choose how forgiving it should be, from strict to gentle • It all happens on your phone. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded, and no account is needed

JAM AND PRACTISE • Build progressions from the chords in your key, or add your own voicings • Dozens of strum and fingerpicking patterns, played close enough to a real hand to practise against • Real drum grooves in 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, 12/8, 5/4 and 7/8

METRONOME AND TUNER • A metronome with a screen of its own: tap tempo, any time signature, drum grooves • Beat dots that show the pulse as it is felt — 5/4 reads 3+2, 6/8 shows two • Silent bars: the click drops out for a few bars and returns on the downbeat — you hear exactly how far you drifted • A chromatic tuner (through the microphone) that follows the tuning you picked
