You take on damaged oil paintings and rebuild them one physical layer at a time, from the varnish down to the bare canvas. Every piece hides its own conditions: how readily its pigments bleed, how much moisture the ground will drink, where the paint has lost its grip on the layer below. A diagnostic pass reveals only part of this, so acting on what you cannot yet see becomes a real gamble. The work moves through six stages, from first examination to the final protective coat, and each conservation method carries a cost. A fast solvent strips grime but can eat into the glaze beneath. A quick putty fill saves time, yet may dome and disturb the paint around it. Careless steps spawn fresh losses that later stages have to repair, and some choices can never be undone. A timeline keeps every decision so you can step back and try a different route. Four measures judge the finished piece: how much original material survived, how restrained the retouching stayed, how sound the structure is, and how much of your work a future restorer could reverse.
