Then a quill you cannot see dips itself, and Elias Thorne, a Victorian scholar bound into the book long ago, replies in flowing copperplate, drawn stroke by stroke as though he were sitting across from you.

He remembers what you tell him. He carries it from page to page. And little by little, he begins to trust you with his own story.
