TransUtter translates podcasts, web articles and text between Simplified Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, then reads the result aloud in a natural voice — so your commute no longer means fighting through a language you only half understand.

■ Five languages, 20 directions Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, in any combination. Chinese is always Simplified Chinese / Mandarin; Portuguese is Brazilian.

■ Four kinds of input · Podcasts: paste an episode link or share one from another app; it downloads, transcribes, translates and narrates · Web articles: share a link from Safari and the article text is extracted, then translated · Text: paste any passage · Audio files: share a local recording from the Files app

■ Read along while you listen · Side-by-side transcript that highlights the line being spoken · Tap any sentence to continue playback from there · Lock screen and headphone controls, background playback, 0.75x-2x speed

■ On-device processing, no points used Text, web articles and local audio files can be processed entirely on your iPhone — offline, and without spending any points. The first-run walkthrough downloads the language pack you need; an Enhanced-quality voice makes narration sound considerably better.

■ Podcasts run in the cloud, priced in points Podcast episodes often run an hour or more, which is slow and battery-hungry on a phone, so podcast conversion runs in the cloud and spends points based on content length: 2 points per minute for podcasts, and 3 for audio you upload, text you paste and web articles; twice that when the target language is English, French, Spanish or Portuguese. Points come with a monthly subscription and are granted each period; whatever you don't use rolls over for one extra month. The same account is charged only once for the same episode; reopening or retrying it does not spend points again.

■ Follow shows Follow the podcasts you keep up with and get notified when a new episode lands. You decide whether to convert it — points are never spent automatically.
