Italian citizenship takes years. Belong Italy keeps the count honest, from today to the day you can apply.
Answer a few questions about your situation and Belong Italy shows your real distance to Italian citizenship: which route applies to you, what you have already met and what still stands between you and the decision. Fully available in English and Italian, switchable any time on the You tab.
YOUR ROUTE, CLEARLY
The general ten year route and the shorter ones: two years if a parent or grandparent was an Italian citizen by birth, three for people born in Italy, four for EU citizens, five for recognised refugees and stateless people, and two years for the spouse or civil partner of an Italian citizen, counted from the marriage and halved if you have children together
Every requirement explained: legal, continuous residence recorded in the anagrafe, Italian at level B1, sufficient declared income over the three preceding years and a clean criminal record
Each rule dated and sourced from the official authorities: the Ministero dell'Interno, Law 91/1992 as amended in 2025, and the recognised certifying bodies
AFTER THE 2025 REFORM
Law 74/2025 tightened citizenship by descent and cut the descendant residence route from three years to two. For people who fall outside the new limits on jus sanguinis, that two year route is now the main door, and Belong Italy tracks the rules as they stand rather than the ones that closed
TRACK WHAT MATTERS
Log trips abroad and see honestly whether time away could put your continuous residence at risk. Italian citizenship law sets no fixed day count — continuity runs on your anagrafe registration staying unbroken — so Belong Italy flags risk instead of inventing limits
Practice gives the language requirement its own place: there is no citizenship test in Italy, so instead of inventing a quiz it tells you exactly what counts — the B1, the shorter B1 Cittadinanza format, and the recognised bodies, CILS, CELI, PLIDA and CERT.IT among them — with the official material one tap away
Try a What if scenario — pass the B1, marry, spend months abroad — and see how your finish line would move. The real rules, on a copy: nothing is saved
Update your situation any time and your dashboard recalculates instantly
WHAT YOU CONTROL, WHAT YOU DON'T
The years you build, the certificate you earn and the record you keep are yours. The Ministry's queue is not: the legal deadline is 24 months, extendable to 36. Belong Italy separates your side from the wait, so you always know which is which
DUAL CITIZENSHIP
Italy lets you keep your original nationality: since 1992, acquiring Italian citizenship asks for no renunciation. Whether your home country lets you keep its own depends on that country's law
