Most apps drown you in words you will never use, in an order that has nothing to do with real life. Mimikara does the opposite. It teaches the 5,000 most common words in the language, in strict frequency order, so the very first things you learn are the words that fill everyday conversation, dramas, and anime. Useful first, exam trivia later.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

Frequency first. Learn the words people truly say long before rare exam vocabulary. Every word is ranked by how often it actually appears.

Connected, not isolated. Every word is a node in a kanji network. Learn 生 and you meet 先生, 生活, 人生, and more. Memory hangs on structure, so words stick instead of slipping away.

Hear the pitch. Japanese has a melody, not just sounds. Mimikara draws each word's pitch-accent contour and includes a dedicated minimal-pair drill, so you can finally tell 箸 from 橋. On-device audio reads every word aloud.

A gentle loop. A lightweight spaced-repetition engine brings words back right when you are about to forget them. Pick up your phone, do a card or two, put it down. Little and often beats cramming.

Learn while you move. Gym mode is hands-free: set the phone down and let high-value words flow past, read aloud, while you walk or train. No tapping, nothing to grade.

See your progress. A coverage ring and frequency curve show how much of real Japanese you now understand, with a per-level JLPT breakdown.

A NOTE FROM TORVEN LABS

I built Mimikara as one person at Torven Labs, an independent software and research lab, because I wanted the app I wished existed as a learner.

I also built it because I miss the original spirit of the internet: a place where people shared what they made, taught each other, and built things out of curiosity and generosity, instead of trying to squeeze money out of every tap. Somewhere along the way, learning tools turned into slot machines: subscriptions, ads, dark patterns designed to keep you hooked, and data quietly sold behind your back.

Mimikara is a small vote for the other way. It is free, and it will stay free. No ads. No subscription. No paywalled "pro" features. No harvesting your data. Just a tool made with care, and shared with anyone who wants to learn.
