MenuLens: Menu Translator

Photograph a menu in Thai or Japanese and read every dish in English, with the printed price and photos. The scan and the translation stay on your iPhone.

You sit down, the menu is four columns of Thai, and the server is waiting. Photograph the page. MenuLens reads it back dish by dish: the name in English, a line on what shows up at the table, the price printed on the menu, and photos of the dish from the web.

A word-for-word translation hands you "grilled intestine" and no way to judge it. MenuLens explains the dish, down to what goes in it and how hot it tends to run.

IN THE APP

• Reads printed menus in many languages, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai and Spanish among them.
• Tags each dish for diet and spice. The tags are an AI estimate from the menu text, so use them to narrow the field and ask your server about allergies.
• Searches and filters inside a scan when the menu runs to sixty dishes and you want the noodles.
• Says the original name out loud, so you can order it the way the kitchen hears it.
• Merges a second scan into the same menu, for the drinks page or the specials board.
• Opens the original photo whenever you want to check a line yourself.
• Keeps your scans, so last night's menu is still there when a friend asks where you ate.

ABOUT THE PHOTOS Photos come from a web search on the dish name. They give you a sense of what the dish looks like. They are not pictures of the plate this restaurant will bring you.

PRICING Scanning, translation and descriptions are free, with no cap on how much you scan. Web photos are the metered part: the free tier covers a set number of dish photo lookups each week, and a subscription raises that ceiling well past it. Subscriptions come weekly, monthly or annual, and the annual plan opens with a 3-day free trial.

MenuLens needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence.
