Stream your photos & videos
Point it at an SMB share and press play. No transcoding, no downloads, no library server — your Apple TV reads the file straight off your NAS.
Miner turns your Apple TV into a front end for the media you already own.
Point it at an SMB share on your network, browse the folders you know, and press play. Files stream straight off the server — nothing is downloaded to the Apple TV, nothing is transcoded, and no library server has to run anywhere.
ONE ENGINE, EVERY CONTAINER
MKV, MP4, AVI, TS, MOV, M4V, WMV and more all go through the same pipeline: FFmpeg demuxing with hardware-accelerated VideoToolbox decoding. H.264 and HEVC are fully supported, including 10-bit and HDR (PQ and HLG), up to 4K.
SEEKING THAT LANDS WHERE YOU AIMED
Press left or right and the picture moves immediately, ten seconds a step. Hold the button and scrubbing accelerates through 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x with live frames the whole way — the number on screen is how fast the picture is actually moving. Let go and playback resumes with the audio already in place, not a second of silence.
SUBTITLES FROM WHEREVER THEY LIVE
Embedded tracks (SRT, ASS, mov_text, WebVTT) and graphic tracks (PGS, VobSub, DVB) are decoded in the app. External .srt and .ass files sitting next to the video are found automatically, including Chinese subtitles saved as GB18030 or Big5 — text encoding is detected rather than guessed. Font size, colour, background and position are yours to set.
AUDIO TRACKS WITHOUT AN INTERRUPTION
Switch languages or commentary tracks mid-scene and the picture never stops. AAC, AC3, E-AC3, DTS, FLAC, Opus, MP3 and more are decoded and mixed for your setup, up to 5.1.
A HOME SCREEN THAT REMEMBERS
Favourite the folders you actually watch and they all appear on the home screen, across every share you have added. Below them: what you were last watching, with resume points, and what your server has gained since you last looked. Posters are generated from the video itself.
SEARCH THAT ANSWERS INSTANTLY
Optional background scanning indexes your favourite folders so search reads a local index instead of interrogating the server. Results appear between keystrokes, and matching works by word — "avatar 2160" and "2160 avatar" both find the file.
ALSO IN THE BOX
- Photos in the same folders, with a full-screen viewer, paging and zoom
- Playback speed from 0.5x to 2x
- Sort by name or date, filter video from photos
- Plays the next file in the folder when one ends
PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION
Miner has no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no servers of its own. Your share addresses stay on the device, passwords go to the system keychain, and the only thing the app connects to is the server you typed in.
FREE TO TRY, THEN PRO
The first 20 titles play with no purchase. Miner Pro then unlocks unlimited playback — monthly, yearly, or a one-time lifetime purchase. Everything else in the app is included either way; Pro adds no feature you cannot see beforehand.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K running tvOS 17 or later
- An SMB2 or SMB3 share on your local network (NAS, Mac, Windows PC, Linux/Samba) and its username and password
- A wired connection or solid Wi-Fi for high-bitrate 4K
HONEST LIMITS
- VP9 and AV1 are not supported — the Apple TV cannot decode them in hardware, and Miner will say so rather than stutter
- Audio is decoded in-app and output up to 5.1; there is no AC3/DTS bitstream passthrough
- Disc images (.iso, VIDEO_TS) are not played
- Graphic subtitles (PGS/VobSub) are pictures by design and cannot be restyled
- Posters come from frames of your own files; there is no online metadata, so no studio artwork or plot summaries
- Browsing and playback only — Miner never writes to, renames, or deletes anything on your server
Miner plays the files you point it at. It does not find, index, download or stream content from the internet.
