Features & Capabilities

From salvage-yard boards to heirloom furniture — snap a photo, read the species and grain, date the style, and follow hands-on restoration tips step by step.

Pull any board off the rack — WoodLens reads the grain and tells you the species, Janka hardness, workability, and best uses in seconds. Know exactly what you're cutting, joining, or finishing before you make a single pass.

WHY WOODWORKERS AND RESTORERS REACH FOR IT

Identify the species, not just "wood." Oak, walnut, maple, mahogany, pine, teak — they look alike but behave very differently under a saw, a stain, or a finish. WoodLens reads the grain, pores, color, and figure and matches the most likely species with a confidence indicator, so you know what you're working with before you cut or finish.

Read the grain and the traits. Every match opens a clear profile: common and botanical names, hardness and workability, typical grain and figure, color and how it ages, and where the timber comes from. The field guide you wish was clipped to your bench — for hobby builders, restorers, and anyone who inherited a mystery dresser.

Date the piece and the style. Pointed at a chair, cabinet, or salvaged door, WoodLens reads construction and design cues — joinery, hardware, veneer, finish — to suggest a likely era and furniture style. A starting point for research, not a certificate of authenticity.

Restore it the right way. Identification is only step one. Each profile links to hands-on guidance for real workshops: strip an old finish safely, fill and repair splits and gouges, sand with the grain, and choose between oil, wax, shellac, and modern finishes. Match the method to the species, don't guess.

Keep a project log that's all yours. Save every identification and project into a personal log on your device. Track the species and pieces you've worked on and the finishes that worked, and earn maker badges as you complete more.

Learn the craft, free. WoodLens ships with in-app guides any maker can read without subscribing: hardwood vs. softwood, how grain direction changes everything, reading joinery to date a piece, choosing the right finish, and working safely with wood dust and strippers.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Snap or pick a photo — frame a clean, well-lit area of bare grain or an end grain cut.
  2. WoodLens matches the likely species with a confidence indicator; confirm or adjust by hand.
  3. Open the profile for traits, workability, style cues, and restoration tips, then save it to your project log.

A NOTE ON IDENTIFICATION AND SAFETY WoodLens is an educational identification and reference tool, not a structural, scientific, or appraisal authority. Identification varies with finish, lighting, weathering, and sample, and look-alikes are common — treat every match as a confident starting point, not a guarantee. Never rely on the app for structural, load-bearing, or safety-critical decisions. Some woods and finishing chemicals produce dust or fumes that can irritate or sensitize; always follow proper ventilation, dust protection, and product safety instructions.

PRIVACY YOU CAN READ Your project log, history, and preferences live on your device. No accounts, no third-party trackers, no ad SDKs. When online recognition is enabled, the scanned photo is sent securely to our recognition service to look up the wood, is not retained afterward, and is never used for ads or tracking. Full details are in the in-app Privacy Policy.

SUBSCRIPTION WoodLens Pro is an auto-renewing subscription. Plans are offered weekly and annually (for example, $12.99 per week or $89.99 per year; promotional pricing may be shown at times). Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically at the same price and period unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel anytime in your App Store account settings. Prices may vary by region.
