Coach, study & play shogi
ShinShogi is a complete, original Shogi (Japanese chess) app for players of every level —
from your very first game to studying like a serious student. It doesn't just let you play;
it actively helps you get better.
A COACH IN YOUR POCKET
• Coach mode warns you the moment a move looks like a blunder — with a one-tap takeback so
you can learn from it instead of losing for it.
• Game Analysis turns a finished game into a lesson: it finds your blunders and the mates you
missed — and every missed mate becomes a puzzle you can replay and solve.
PLAY
• Minishogi: a 5×5 variant with no knights or lances and a single-rank promotion zone — fast,
sharp games on a smaller board.
• Named AI rivals, each with its own personality — an aggressive ranging-rook attacker, a
defensive castle-builder, and more — across strengths from gentle beginner to master.
• Online turn-based matches over Game Center.
• Two-player pass-and-play on one device.
• Quick Match: handicap (komaochi) games and random scenarios.
• Optional clocks with byoyomi, plus hint, takebacks, board flip, and a full move list.
LEARN
• Interactive piece guide — tap any piece to see how it moves and promotes.
• Opening Explorer: walk a branching tree of openings and see exactly where each line leads.
• Drills: build the Mino and Boat castles move by move, and practice finishing technique with
endgame problems.
• Model Games: original annotated games to study — and import your own games as standard .kif files.
• Tactics: tsume (mate) problems from mate-in-1 to mate-in-5, every solution verified by a
built-in mate solver, plus a Puzzle of the Day to keep your streak going.
REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARN
• Spaced-repetition review resurfaces the puzzles you get wrong — Anki-style — so the patterns
actually stick.
IMPROVE
• Post-game review with an evaluation bar and engine best-move suggestions.
• Save and resume your game; share games as KIF or import any position via SFEN/USI notation.
PLAY YOUR WAY
• Light and dark appearance (or follow the system), wood and modern board themes, kanji or
Western piece labels, coordinates, sounds, full VoiceOver accessibility, and tuned layouts
for both iPhone and iPad.
ShinShogi is offline-first and needs no account to learn or play the computer (online play uses
Game Center). Everything runs on a custom Swift engine — rules, AI, and mate solver — written
from the ground up.
ShinShogi Pro (a one-time unlock) adds Minishogi (5×5), the Walnut and Slate board themes, and
the full mate-in-3 / mate-in-5 tactics and endgame-drill library.
