What is a quatrefoil? The quatrefoil (a four-lobed, flower-like shape formed by overlapping circles) shows up on several temples and cathedrals, often carved into stonework, windows, or doors. A few layers of meaning are commonly cited by scholars:

• the four Gospel witnesses (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), the very writers of the Good Word
• a symbol of completeness or the four cardinal directions, echoing the belief that the gospel is meant to go out to "the four quarters of the earth" and gather all nations
• sego lily (Utah state flower), tying the symbol to the Latter-day Saint pioneer experience of survival and providence Often portrayed on temples, it signifies a place where heaven's word reaches earth, both through ancient scripture and through ongoing revelation received inside.
