Traveling in Japan and worried about what's in that snack? MoguMogu reads Japanese ingredient labels for you and tells you, in one scan, whether it fits your dietary rules.
Built for the moment you're standing in a Lawson, holding a colorful package, with no clue what 乳化剤 or ゼラチン means in your language.
WHO USES IT
• Tourists with food allergies — peanut, shellfish, dairy, soy, wheat. We check against all 28 Japanese statutory allergens, including the 7 specified items and the 21 recommended-label items.
• Halal travelers from anywhere — we flag alcohol, pork, lard, gelatine, and unidentified animal-derived ingredients on Japanese packaging.
• Vegans and vegetarians — we know dashi has bonito, mirin contains alcohol, and 寒天 (kanten/agar) is safe even when it looks weird.
• Parents traveling with allergic kids — set up one profile per child, scan a konbini sandwich, get an instant verdict.
• Long-term residents in Japan who never want to second-guess an ingredient list again.
WHY IT'S USEFUL IN JAPAN SPECIFICALLY
• Japanese ingredient lists are in Japanese only. Most products from major manufacturers do not include English. Google Translate guesses ingredients; we identify them by category.
• Japanese food labelling uses two formats — 個別表示 ("individual") and 一括表示 ("bundled"). Our parser handles both.
• Cultural ingredients like 出汁, みりん, ゼラチン, 寒天, アーモンド粉末 are flagged correctly based on your profile, not just word-matched.
• 28 Japanese statutory allergens recognised, in Japanese name and English equivalent, with the correct legal severity tier.
HOW IT WORKS
- Open the app at the convenience store, the supermarket, or before you bite into a hotel snack.
- Either scan the barcode (instant lookup if in our database) or photograph the ingredients label (camera + on-device OCR).
- See a verdict immediately: SAFE / NOT SAFE / CANNOT VERIFY — with the exact culprit ingredient highlighted if not safe.
- Tap any ingredient to see its translation and why it's flagged.
YOUR PROFILE, YOUR RULES
Set up once on the first launch:
• Pick any combination of allergens.
• Halal? Vegan? Vegetarian? Pescatarian? All supported.
• Add per-rule exceptions, like "vegetarian but I eat eggs" or "halal but I'm OK with mirin in trace amounts" — your call.
• Multiple profiles for family members or your travel partner.
PRIVACY
• Your scan history lives on your device. Period.
• The backend only ever sees the barcode and the OCR-extracted ingredient text — never your name, email, or identity.
• No ads. No third-party tracking SDK. No retargeting.
• Optional account if you want to sync history across devices.
WHAT IT CAN'T DO (we're honest)
• Cross-contamination "may contain" warnings — always read the package itself for life-threatening allergies.
• Some products aren't in our barcode database yet. Use the OCR scan and email us the JAN code, we add them.
• Restaurant menus — for prepared food, ask the staff or use a phrase card.
FREE. NO ADS. NO IN-APP PURCHASES.
