Hola Means Hola

A frequency-ordered Spanish learner's dictionary with more than 70,000 words (e.g. hablar) and more than 450,000 forms (e.g. hablo, hablé).

The top 25,000 of these words are available in a Reader View, which is a dictionary meant to be read front to back. This Reader View is organized into 500 pages of 50 words each, and you can read it, or listen to it, or study it with flash cards.

This learner's dictionary is meant for intermediate and advanced Spanish learners who want to understand without translation. English hints are available for each entry with the press of a thumb, but the dictionary is designed to be fully usable without them.

Each Spanish word (with very few exceptions) is defined using only words that came before it, so you can read this dictionary front to back and each word along the way will be defined using only words you've seen before. Note that this isn't true for the first 1,000 words because, well, there has to be some base set from which to define words. But the first 1,000 are defined using basic Spanish.

Each entry contains:

• the Spanish word
• the frequency rank of the word
• a simple Spanish definition
• an example sentence
• optionally, with a press, an English hint

Some things you can do:

• Search for Spanish words.
• Search for English words and get automatically redirected to the Spanish translation (or disambiguation page when there are multiple matches).
• Hide obvious English cognates like 'animal' from the Reader View.
• Listen to a page of words while walking.
• Download audio for offline listening.
• Review words through a page-based review system.

The app does not require an account and does not include ads or third-party analytics.

Note that only 5,000 words are packaged with the app. A free one-time ~59 MB download is required to fetch all 70,000+ entries.
