Recognizing a word is not the same as being able to use it. Cards advance through production: you compose the target word into your own sentence, and a language model evaluates that sentence for comprehension, accuracy, and complexity before the word moves forward in your review schedule.

Real language is multimodal, so Menzi tracks every word across four axes: meaning, reading, listening, and speaking. A word counts as mastered only when you understand it, can read it, catch it in speech, and say it out loud. Extend that across thousands of words and fluency emerges.

Grammar, not just vocabulary

Words are the building blocks; patterns hold them together. Menzi includes a structured library of high-frequency grammar patterns with their own practice and progress tracking, so you’re building sentences instead of stacking nouns.

Your vocabulary is the material

Menzi doesn’t teach from a fixed corpus. Your deck is what everything is generated from: stories, listening sentences, grammar drills, and the tutor’s own conversation are all built from words you already hold, with a deliberate margin of new ones mixed in.

You set that margin. Pull a story toward the familiar and it reads almost entirely in words you know; push it the other way and it stretches you. This is comprehensible input in the technical sense, and it is hard to come by any other way — material at your exact level has to be made for one person.

Nothing you meet gets lost

Every sentence you write, story you read, and conversation you hold is scanned for words you haven’t formally studied. Each one is filed into a backlog with a count of how often you’ve met it, so the words you keep running into rise toward the front on their own.

They arrive at a pace you can absorb. New words enter your deck only as your schedule has room for them, measured against what is already due — so exposure can run ahead of study without your daily review turning into a wall.
