Features & Capabilities

There is a moment, just before sleep, when the noise of the day settles and a line of poetry rises in the dark. Panna is built for that moment.

A quiet place to read and listen to Hindi poetry — heartfelt, unhurried, and hand-picked.

Kabir's defiance. Mirabai's longing. Ghalib's ache. Gulzar's quiet rebellion. Bachchan's reckoning. The anonymous voices that carried this language across generations. And new poems being written today — by contemporary poets recording original work directly into the book you're reading. Old and new, side by side, the way a living language has always worked.

No feed. No algorithm. No "you might also like." Just the poem in front of you, and the next one when you're ready.

— Read on paper — Every poem is set in Devanagari on a warm, paper-textured canvas. Centered, unhurried, with room for the matras to breathe. Eight nature backdrops to choose from — dawn waves, Varanasi ghats, misty mountains, lotus ponds, a single oil lamp in the dark. The English translation sits quietly beneath, if and when you want it.

— Listen in twilight — Each poem is recited by a voice cast specifically for it — Kabir in a sant's grain, Mirabai in a bhakta's lilt, Mahadevi Verma in a contralto that knows. Original work is recorded by the poet themselves wherever possible. Background ragas, mixed at the right level to lift the voice, not compete with it. Switch between male and female recitations where both exist. Use the 15-second skip when a line deserves another hearing.

— Discover by rasa — Eight moods, the way the old commentaries thought about it. Ishq (love). Viraha (longing). Tanhai (solitude). Baarish (rain). Yaadein (memory). Junoon (passion). Baghawat (defiance). Khamoshi (silence). Tap one, find your evening.

— Share a single verse — Long-press any line in a poem. It lights up in the rasa's colour. Tap share. You get a beautiful image card — the line, the poet, a quiet "Panna · पन्ना" mark — ready for WhatsApp, Instagram, or anywhere you want a single line of Hindi to do its work.

— Build a compilation — Weave together your own arrangement of poems. Themed evenings. A gift for someone moving away. The fifteen verses your grandmother used to recite, alongside three you just discovered last week. Play them through in order, save them, share them.

— A small daily ritual — Read one poem a day, or listen to one, and a quiet streak counter keeps you company. No badges. No notifications begging you back. Just a number that grows because you kept showing up.

— Made free by readers — We don't run ads. We don't sell your data. There is no premium tier. Every poem is available to every reader, today and forever. The app exists because a small group of Friends of Panna fund it — servers, recording costs, the next compilation. If Panna becomes part of your evenings, you can become one of them. Or just read for free, forever, and that's enough.

Two themes — a cream paper light theme for daylight reading, and a dusk dark theme that's easy on the eyes after sunset. Both treat Devanagari with the typographic care it deserves.

Hindi poetry is not a museum piece. It is, and has always been, a living conversation between the poets who came before, the poets writing now, and the readers who keep both alive by listening. Panna is one small way to keep that going.
