Features & Capabilities

Train with beginner sound patterns, quiz yourself on real bird recordings, and help grow a moderated community bird library.

Bird-A-Lingo is an original bird sound learning app built to help people recognize birds by ear. Most bird apps focus on photos and field-guide browsing. Bird-A-Lingo is different: it teaches listening. The app combines beginner sound-pattern training, real bird recording quizzes, regional bird libraries, practice mode, review mode, spoken-answer practice, and a moderated community contribution system. Learning Mode uses simplified training patterns made for beginners. These sounds are not presented as real field recordings. They are educational rhythm and cadence guides that help new learners hear the shape of a bird song or call before moving into real recordings. Quiz Mode can then use real bird audio from the bird library. As the community database grows, birds can include multiple sounds such as songs, calls, alarm calls, flight calls, juvenile sounds, drumming, or other field recordings. Each sound stays attached to one bird record, so learners see one bird with a richer sound profile instead of duplicate entries. Bird-A-Lingo also includes regional libraries. A bird can appear in multiple regions when its real-world range overlaps those areas, making the app useful for backyard birders, students, teachers, families, and nature groups across different parts of the United States. The app includes a collaborative bird database powered by Firebase. Contributors can submit new birds, photos, sound recordings, and additional sounds for birds already in the library. Submissions are not automatically published. They go through an admin review workflow before becoming part of the shared learning database. Bird-A-Lingo was independently designed and built as a human-made learning tool for birders, educators, and curious beginners. It is not a reskinned template, not a generic quiz clone, and not a repackaged app. Its core feature set is specific to bird sound learning, progressive listening practice, and moderated community database building. Features include: Beginner Learning Mode with simplified cadence and rhythm patterns Quiz Mode using real bird recordings Practice Mode for replaying bird sounds and reviewing facts Review Mode for improving recognition over time Regional bird libraries with live bird counts Multiple sounds per bird without duplicate bird entries Sound type labels for songs, calls, alarms, flight calls, drumming, and more Bird photos, facts, credits, sources, and licenses Speech recognition for spoken bird-name answers Contributor tools for submitting new birds and additional sounds Admin review workflow for approving or rejecting submissions Firebase-backed collaborative bird database Bird-A-Lingo is built for people who want to listen more closely to the natural world and help create a better shared bird sound library over time.
