WHAT ONE PHOTO GIVES YOU

• The Latin scientific name, or the genus where a photo stops
• The species' risk level: harmless, stinging, biting, allergenic, venomous, disease vector or unknown
• The group, order and family: insect, arachnid, myriapod or crustacean
• Habitat, range and adult body length

THE RISK LEVEL LEADS EVERY RESULT A short label from a fixed set: Harmless, Stinging, Biting, Allergenic, Venomous, Disease vector or Unknown. It belongs to the species, not to the arthropod in your photo and not to the room you are standing in, and it is never a number, a scale or an instruction. Harmless is a description, not a clearance: for an unfamiliar large arthropod this app says photograph it from a distance.

LOOK-ALIKES, SIDE BY SIDE Every result lists the species it is most often confused with, each with its own risk level and the trait that tells them apart: a hoverfly beside a honey bee, a house spider beside a brown recluse. A comparison to read, not a verdict.

SPIDERS ARE NOT INSECTS Eight legs and two body segments make an arachnid, six legs and three make an insect, centipedes are myriapods and woodlice are crustaceans. The result names the group before it attempts a species. Bees, wasps, ants, beetles, moths, caterpillars, ticks, cockroaches and pantry pests are in scope, and so is whatever is on the tomatoes: what it eats and its role there, never how to remove it.

BUILT FOR THE PHOTOS YOU ACTUALLY TAKE Through a window, at an angle, from as far back as you wanted to stand. Leg count, body segments, antennae, wing pattern, eye placement and markings go into the match. Many flies, beetles and small spiders need a microscope for a species call, and when a photo cannot support one the result stops at the genus or family.

For a severe reaction to a sting or bite, especially difficulty breathing or rapid swelling, contact emergency services. It does not read skin and it has nothing to say about removal. The risk level is background about a species, never an instruction about the one in front of you.
