FlowTone trains your ear to hear the four Mandarin tones — the pitches that change a word's meaning. It is a memory game in the spirit of Wordle: listen to a word, remember the tone colors, then tap the tones back. Green, yellow and red feedback shows how close you got.

WHY TONES ARE THE FIRST HURDLE In Mandarin, the same syllable spoken with a different tone means a different word. The syllable "ma" can mean mother, hemp, horse or scold, depending on its tone. Most apps teach you to read and write, but few train your ear to hear these differences. FlowTone came from two years of failing to hear them. Color-coding each tone turned that confusion into a reflex — now it is yours to practice.
