HOW STUDKIT FINDS STUDS

The iPhone has a 3-axis magnetometer, the same sensor that powers Compass. Studkit reads it 60 times per second and watches for distortions in the magnetic field. Iron and steel objects bend the field around them.

WILL FIND: nails and screws inside wood studs, steel studs in commercial walls, iron and steel pipes, metal junction boxes.

WILL NOT FIND: wood studs without any nails (very rare), plastic, PEX or copper pipes, electrical wires (unless in metal conduit), or anything deeper than about 8 cm / 3 inches. These are physics limits, no app can change this.

For best results: remove your phone case (especially MagSafe), decide your scanning pose first, then press power. Hold the back of the phone flat against the wall and sweep at about one finger-width per second.
