Renly: Hieroglyph Studio

Renly is a small studio for the older alphabet — the one carved into temple walls, the one painted on the inner side of tomb doors, the one that became fashionable again in nineteenth-century Europe when entire continents could not stop looking at Egypt.

Type a name. Type a phrase. Type a short blessing for someone you love. Renly inscribes it in hieroglyphs inside a gold cartouche — an owl for M, a vulture for A, a reed leaf for I. Switch the cartouche style: severe Old Kingdom, elaborate New Kingdom, rounder Ptolemaic. Recolor it: royal gold on lapis night, dark ink on papyrus cream, weathered red on tomb sandstone. Save the result to your library, or send it as an image to a friend who will know what they are looking at.

Beyond your own inscriptions, the app keeps three quiet collections.

The Atlas is a catalog of every hieroglyph in the standard Unicode block. Each glyph carries the sound it represented, the object it depicted, the meaning it carried, and the era when it was used. Sorted by sound, by category, by period. A reference to keep.

The Kings is a gallery of actual cartouches from the historical record — Tutankhamun, Cleopatra, Ramses the Great, Hatshepsut, Khufu, Akhenaten, Nefertiti. Each one rendered exactly as it appeared on a temple wall, paired with a calm biographical page about the person whose name it spelled.

The Daily rotates a featured glyph every morning and a Pharaoh of the Week every Monday. No streaks. No badges. Simply something quietly new, on a quiet schedule.
