Features & Capabilities

Real Reading turns any physical book into a personal vocabulary tutor. Instead of stopping every few pages to thumb through a dictionary, just snap a photo. We find the words worth learning and explain them in plain English — no obscure jargon, no circular definitions, no looking up the words inside the definition.

Built for English learners who already love books and want to read more of them.

HOW IT WORKS

Take a photo of any page — a novel, a textbook, a magazine, a newspaper. Real Reading identifies the words a learner is most likely to find difficult and pulls a clean, beginner-friendly definition for each one. Words you want to remember get saved to your personal word list. Words you already know are filed away — they won't bother you again.

EASY DEFINITIONS

Most dictionaries explain hard words using harder words. Real Reading's definitions are rewritten for learners: short sentences, common vocabulary, the kind of explanation a patient teacher would give. If you can read the book, you can read the definition.

YOUR PERSONAL WORD LIBRARY

Every word you save lives in a beautifully typeset library, organized by the day you found it and the book it came from. New Words shows what you're still learning. Known Words is a record of how far you've come. Tap any word to see its definition again, the page you photographed it on, and the sentence it appeared in.

SPACED-REPETITION REVIEWS

Real Reading quietly tracks which words you remember and which ones slip away. The words you struggle with come back more often; the words you've mastered fade into the background. No streaks to babysit, no badges — just a queue that gets shorter as you get better.

GAMES

Vocabulary doesn't have to be flashcards. Wordy Invaders, our first language game, drops your due words onto descending alien ships and asks you to recognize the one that matches the definition before the row reaches your fleet. Three difficulty settings; one to thirty minutes per session.

DESIGNED LIKE A BOOK

We took the visual language of a Britannica encyclopedia — cream paper, EB Garamond and Cinzel typography, thin double-rule dividers — and built the whole app inside it. Real Reading feels like a printed reference, because that's the mood we want around your reading.

PRIVACY

Your reading is your business. Page photos are processed on our servers only long enough to transcribe the words, then discarded — they're never stored, never trained on, never shared. Your saved words, your review history, and your reading dates all stay on your device.

WHO IT'S FOR

Intermediate and advanced English learners who read for pleasure or study. Students working through assigned reading in a second language. Anyone who wants to grow their vocabulary the old-fashioned way — by reading good books — without the friction of stopping to look things up. Pick up a book. Take a picture. Keep reading.
