PianoTrace: Piano Practice

TempoPro is a piano practice system built around digital scores.

Import a MusicXML or MXL score. TempoPro analyzes its structure, difficulty, and technical demands, then creates a guided path for hands-separate phrases, hands-together practice, phrase connections, and complete performances.

Digital Score Import & Structural Analysis

• Import MusicXML (.musicxml and MusicXML-based .xml files) and MXL scores
• Render notation and identify measures, phrases, and larger sections
• Explore phrase boundaries, formal sections, and related or varied material
• Keep scores, practice pieces, progress, and analysis results organized by piece
• Jump directly from an analysis result to the relevant place in the score

Difficulty Breakdown

• Estimate the score's overall demands, from beginner to performance level
• Explain difficulty across seven dimensions: rhythm; note reading; speed and continuity; shifts and leaps; chords and hand span; coordination between staves; and expression and articulation
• Highlight harder measures and sections that may need extra preparation
• Separate essential prerequisites, skills developed by the piece, and techniques that appear only locally
• Use graded reference excerpts and audio examples to understand what each difficulty level involves

Smart Practice

• Generate a practice path from the score's phrases, voices, and structure
• Progress through hands-separate, hands-together, phrase-by-phrase, connection, and complete-piece practice
• Focus on one clear task at a time while preserving your progress
• Move forward after a successful attempt, or return to the relevant measures and phrases for targeted work
• Choose any measure, phrase, or full piece at any time for independent practice

MIDI Performance Scoring & Score Annotations

• Compare your MIDI performance with the imported score
• Receive measure, phrase, and complete-piece scores when enough performance evidence is available
• Get feedback on MIDI-observable aspects such as pitch, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, coordination, pedaling, and overall continuity
• Locate issues at their exact positions in the score, with note-level annotations where applicable
• Receive next-step practice suggestions based on patterns such as wrong notes, phrase transitions, tempo control, and interruptions

Professional Metronome & Free Practice

• Start a free-practice session without importing a score
• Configure common meters, rhythms, and subdivisions

Important Information

• Score import currently supports MusicXML and MXL. PDF and image-based scores are not supported.
• MIDI files cannot be imported as digital scores.
• Performance detection and scoring in Smart Practice require a compatible MIDI device. TempoPro does not use a microphone to recognize acoustic-piano performances.
• Difficulty analysis describes the demands of the score. It does not assess your current ability, predict learning time, or provide an official exam grade.
• Full difficulty details, Smart Practice paths, detailed annotations, and some advanced features require TempoPro Pro.
