Description — what this app is for

Teach and Learn Cantonese is built for listen → repeat → check practice. The main card shows a Chinese sentence or phrase drawn from a large lesson bank (mostly simplified script in the bank, including a long words-and-phrases list of short lines). Directly under that line you will see an English meaning as a study aid (it is not a full literary translation of every nuance, but it matches the lesson intent).

Tap Teacher read (the label depends on your UI language) to hear the same wording spoken with an iOS Hong Kong Cantonese voice (zh-HK). Tap You speak, say the line in Cantonese, then Stop. Tap Score to refresh Accuracy (wording match, with simplified/traditional normalization where possible), Tone (from recognition confidence), and Overall.

Use the topic and level menus to narrow which sentences appear, then Next sentence to pull another line that fits those filters. The small line under the card shows the current topic and difficulty (internally levels are tagged A1 / A2 / B1; in English they read as Easy / Medium / Harder).

Interface language (globe)

Tap the globe icon on the right side of the title row (the same rounded bar as the app title at the top of the screen) to cycle: English → Simplified Chinese → Traditional Chinese → English … Your choice is saved on the device. Buttons, headings, status messages, and filter menu labels follow that language.

The practice Chinese on the card and what the teacher reads stay in the lesson script; only the surrounding UI strings change.

Controls — how to play each round

1. The first time you use speaking features, allow Microphone and Speech Recognition for this app in Settings → Privacy & Security (or follow the in-app hint to Settings).

2. Optional: tap the globe in the title row until menus and buttons are in the language you prefer.

3. Open the topic menu: All, Daily life, Work, Shipping & logistics, Travel, or Words & phrases (short useful lines).

4. Open the level menu: All, Easy, Medium, or Harder (maps to easier vs harder lines in the bank).

5. Read the Chinese line and the English gloss underneath if you want a quick sense of the meaning.

6. Tap Teacher read to play audio (use device volume; speaker output is preferred).

7. Tap You speak to start listening; speak clearly in Cantonese toward the device.

8. Tap Stop to end capture and keep the latest transcript in the You speak box.

9. Tap Score once there is some recognized text (the button stays off until then).

10. Tap Next sentence for a new line that still matches your topic and level filters.

Note: While the teacher is speaking or while recording, the topic and level pickers are disabled so filters do not change mid-turn. Speech synthesis and recognition use zh-HK where the system supports it.
