ELEVATOR MECHANIC PREP: PASS YOUR STATE LICENSING EXAM

Elevator mechanic licensing exams test ASME A17.1 Safety Code, NEC electrical requirements, OSHA standards, and mechanical systems. Candidates who fail are most often weak on ASME A17.1 code specifics, electrical theory, and safety device testing intervals.

TRACTION VS HYDRAULIC COMPARISON

Traction elevator: steel ropes and traction sheave driven by electric motor. Geared traction uses a gearbox (slower speeds). Gearless traction for high-rise and high-speed. Counterweight reduces motor load. Safety devices: governor, safeties, buffers, final limit switches. No practical speed limit, suitable for high-rise.

Hydraulic elevator: pump, jack, and oil push the car up. Gravity controls lowering. Types: in-ground direct acting, above-ground holeless, roped hydraulic. Safety devices: lowering valve, pressure relief valve, rupture valve, cylinder leak detector. Maximum practical travel approximately 50 feet, not suitable for high-rise.

ASME A17.1 CODE REFERENCE

Pit: minimum 2 feet deep for traction, lighting at top of ladder, stop switch within 2 feet, ladder required if pit exceeds 35 inches. Machine room: minimum 7-foot headroom, temperature 50 to 90 degrees F, disconnect switch within sight of equipment. Hoistway: fire-resistive construction, no combustible materials. Inspection intervals: periodic inspection annually, no-load safety test every 5 years, full-load safety test every 5 years, governor and rope gripper test every 5 years.

SAFETY DEVICE GUIDE

Governor: centrifugal, activates when car speed exceeds set overspeed, trips the safety, tested annually. Car safety: grips guide rails to stop car in overspeed or free fall. Instantaneous (lower speeds) or progressive (higher speeds). Buffer: absorbs energy at end of travel. Oil buffers (traction), spring buffers (hydraulic). Door interlock: prevents movement unless hoistway door is locked. Pit stop switch: breaks control circuit, within reach from pit ladder.

1,000+ PRACTICE QUESTIONS

ELECTRICAL THEORY AND NEC (30%): Three-phase power, motor theory, motor control circuits, NEC Article 620, grounding and bonding, branch circuits, disconnect means, GFCIs in machine rooms.

ASME A17.1 CODE (25%): Pit, machine room, and hoistway requirements, car enclosure, inspection and test intervals, emergency operation, accessibility requirements.

MECHANICAL SYSTEMS (25%): Traction components (sheave, ropes, counterweight, car frame, guide rails), hydraulic components (pump, jack, valve, cylinder), brake systems, lubrication.

SAFETY DEVICES (10%): Governor function and overspeed settings, safety types, buffer types, door interlock operation, testing intervals.

OSHA AND SAFETY (10%): OSHA 1926 Subpart R, general industry, lockout/tagout, fall protection in hoistways, confined space for pits.

Every question includes a detailed explanation with ASME A17.1 and NEC section references.
