Tamil — A Primer

First Tamil is a primer for adults learning to read and write the language for the first time.

Most Tamil-learning apps are built for children. First Tamil is built for grown-ups: people who want to read their grandparents' letters, the verses of Bhāratiyār, the question Ramana asked — நான் யார்? — Who am I?

The app is organised around nine lessons. Each one is short — about fifteen minutes — and builds on the one before. By the end you can read நான் for yourself.

What you learn

• All 12 Tamil vowels, the structural backbone of the script. • The combining rule that turns 18 consonants and 12 vowels into 216 letters — once you understand the rule, every letter follows. • Six core consonants, taught as hard-and-nasal pairs at three places of articulation. • How to write each letter by hand, with a Pencil or with your finger.

How it teaches

Every letter has a real Tamil word attached. You don't memorise shapes in the dark — you learn அ through அன்பு (love), உ through உள்ளது (that which exists), க through கண்ணன் (Krishna). The audio plays the moment a letter appears, so you hear it before you read it.

Each lesson ends with a quiet self-check: write the new letters from memory on a blank canvas, compare against the answer, and move on when you're ready.

What's not in the app

No streaks. No hearts. No badges. No gamification. No push notifications shaming you for missing a day. The tone is a quiet study tool — like sitting with a patient teacher.

Designed for older eyes and older hands

Large text. Generous spacing. Big tap targets. Nothing hidden behind gestures. Audio you can replay any time. Apple Pencil and finger both work for handwriting.

The nine-lesson primer is the foundation. The longer arc — taking you to Thirukkural couplets and the opening invocation of Ramana's Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu — is in development.
