Web browsing -> text & symbols
SymBrowser is a web browser that puts a clear picture symbol above every word on the page. It opens the real web — news, recipes, school sites, shopping, information pages — and adds communication symbols on top, so people who read with symbols can use the same internet as everyone else.
It is made for symbol readers: AAC users, autistic people, people with a learning disability, people with aphasia or memory difficulties, and children who are just beginning to read.
HOW IT WORKS
Type an address, tap a link, or search — SymBrowser loads the page and places a symbol above each word it recognises. Turn the symbols on or off at any time, and make them larger or smaller to suit the reader.
Every word is matched in a careful order so that as many words as possible get the right picture:
- Your chosen symbol set is checked first — the exact word, then its base form (so "running" finds "run", "children" finds "child").
- A large built-in curriculum symbol collection is checked next.
- A synonym is tried last, so a related word can still provide a symbol.
CHOOSE THE SYMBOLS THAT SUIT THE READER
SymBrowser comes with several symbol sets so you can pick the style that works best — including colour and line-drawing sets. You can also load your own symbols from a ZIP file, so personal or service-specific symbols work too. Common Bliss and Mulberry file-naming styles are understood automatically.
READ ALOUD WITH WORD HIGHLIGHTING
Open Panel View to see the page text in a clean, evenly spaced layout with symbols. Tap Play and SymBrowser reads it aloud, highlighting each word as it is spoken and scrolling to keep up. Tap any word to start reading from that point. Choose the voice you prefer.
FAVOURITES FOR THE PAGES THAT MATTER
Set up a favourite for each website a person uses often. Every favourite shows the site's own icon next to its name, so pages are easy to recognise and open with one tap. Rename favourites to simple words, and import bookmarks you already have from another browser.
BUILT-IN HELP, SHOWN IN SYMBOLS
The Help page is itself displayed with symbols using your chosen set, so it works as a live example and stays accessible to the people who use the app.
