Kerf - Cut List Optimizer

Optimal cuts. Less waste.

Features & Capabilities

New: Snap a photo of any cut list and Kerf imports it. Plus three layout strategies — pick the one that matches your tools.

Stop guessing how many sheets of plywood you need.

Kerf is the cut list optimizer built specifically for woodworkers. Tell it what stock you have and what pieces you need, and it shows you exactly how to lay them out—ready for the table saw, with every inch of plywood accounted for.

— BUILT FOR THE SHOP — Natural Entry: Type measurements the way you'd write them on a piece of scrap: 24 1/2, 2' 6 3/4, or 1/8.

Metric Support: Switch to millimeters or centimeters if that's how you work.

Smart Kerf Accounting: Set your blade width once and Kerf accounts for it on every cut. Never come up short again.

Grain Direction: Lock pieces to the grain when you care which way the wood runs.

Auto-Sorting: Mix thicknesses in one project. Your 3/4" cabinet sides and 1/4" backs are sorted onto the right stock automatically.

Progress Tracking: Tap each piece as you cut it so you know exactly where you are in the build.

— CHOOSE YOUR LAYOUT — Best Leftover: Leaves one big reusable scrap. The default if you save offcuts for future projects.

Fewest Sheets: Packs the cuts as tight as physics allows. Best when sheet goods are expensive.

Easiest Cuts: Every cut is a full edge-to-edge pass. Built for woodworkers who only have a table saw—no jigsaw or track saw required.

— IMPORT ANYTHING — Photo or Scan: Snap a picture of a printed cut list, cabinet plan, or handwritten notes. Kerf reads it and fills in the pieces for you.

Voice Dictation: "I need four shelves twenty-four by twelve from 3/4 oak plywood." Kerf parses it.

Files: CSVs, PDFs, and plain text all import directly.

— TAKE IT TO THE BENCH — Visual Layouts: Swipe through your sheets one at a time, with every cut labeled and color-coded.

Easy Sharing: Export your layout as a PDF or PNG. AirDrop it to your shop iPad, print it, or text it to a buddy.

iCloud Sync: Start a project on your phone, finish it on your iPad. No accounts, no signups, no ads—just your private iCloud.

Kerf was built for hobbyists who'd rather measure once on their phone than waste half a sheet of expensive plywood. If you've ever stood in front of a 4×8 sheet trying to mentally "Tetris" your cut list, Kerf is for you.

User Reviews

UI is well laid out, pleasing to the eye, and fairly easy to use. However, it has problems. 1. You can’t delete a “cut” if one has been created in error. I thought “add cut” meant to create the one I just entered the specs for. No, this starts the creation of a brand new cut which can’t be deleted and messes up the computation of the cut list. Had to start over with a new “project.” 2. The pop-up where you enter the specs for a cut is mostly hidden by the iPad keyboard and you can’t scroll down to enter the next spec unless you hide the keyboard. That’s annoying. 3. Why is thickness a spec for a cut? It has no effect on the computation. But there it is so I try to enter the correct thickness. It defaults to 3/4 for some reason and the only way to update it is to carefully place the text insertion point right after “3/4” and backspace (delete). What a PITA for something doesn’t matter. I could just ignore it, but here we are. You get two stars for making it free and not trying to extort payments or place ads over crucial info. A couple tweaks to fix the above issues and I’ll give it 5 stars.
