Features & Capabilities

IngredientCheck scans a food product barcode and classifies every ingredient individually against your dietary profile.

Halal profile is functional today. Vegan, vegetarian, and kosher profiles are designed in for future versions.

What you get: • Every ingredient becomes a tappable, color-coded chip: green for allowed, orange for caution, red for forbidden, gray for no data. • Tap any chip to see what the ingredient is, where it commonly comes from, the verdict reasoning, and the named sources backing the classification (Wikipedia, Open Food Facts, WorldOfIslam, scripture references). Every source has a tappable URL. • Compound ingredients on a label, like "Leavening Agent (E500(ii), Yeast)" or "Parmesan (Milk, Salt, Enzymes)", appear with both the parent name and the parenthesized sub-ingredients — so what you see in the app matches what's on the package. • Halal-aware pattern detection catches subtleties OFF's generic vegan/vegetarian flags miss — alcohol carriers in natural flavors, enzyme source in hydrolyzed proteins, modified starches, wine vinegars. • Manufacturer-declared labels (HALAL, KOSHER, VEGAN, ORGANIC, GLUTEN-FREE) shown when the package declares them — visually separated from our own ingredient analysis, so it's clear which claims come from us and which from the manufacturer. • Recent scans on the home screen — tap to re-open without re-scanning. • Active dietary profile selector in Settings.

Transparency: Every classification cites at least one named source. The "Where our data comes from" screen in Settings lists every source the app uses with direct links. We are transparent about what we know and what we don't — including that the highest-authority halal certification bodies (JAKIM, IFANCA, LPPOM MUI, HFA, HMC, MUIS) are not yet integrated.

Privacy: No account, no login, no analytics. Scan history is stored locally on your device. The only network requests are anonymous lookups to Open Food Facts and our open GitHub data repo.

Disclaimer: Informational only. Not a fatwa. For definitive rulings, consult a qualified scholar or your local certification body.

Data source: Open Food Facts (https://world.openfoodfacts.org/). Ingredient classification database: open-source on GitHub at sfc38/ingredient-checker-data, fetched at launch so corrections ship to users without an app update.
