Smart Grass answers those questions every day - based on the weather forecast for your location, your soil type and how much sun your lawn gets. No guesswork, no wasted water.

TURFY - YOUR ASSISTANT ON THE HOME SCREEN Turfy greets you every time you open the app and tells you plainly what to do with your lawn today. He takes into account rainfall, your previous watering and the forecast for the days ahead. Sometimes he will suggest 20 minutes of watering. Sometimes - to skip it today.

SET UP ONCE, TAILORED FROM THEN ON At the start you set a few things, so the advice applies to your lawn rather than to lawns in general:

• Location - pick the spot on the map
• Lawn area
• Soil type - soil, sand or clay
• Sun exposure - shade, partial shade or full sun
• Wind exposure
• Preferred mowing day
• Sprinkler output in litres per minute

WATER STATUS This tab shows what is happening to the water in your soil:

• A bar chart with rainfall, watering and evaporation
• Turfy's recommendation: whether to water and for how long

CARE CALENDAR You log what you have done and the app keeps track of the rest:

• Watering - mark the day and set the duration with the slider
• Mowing - record the date and see how often you mow
• Fertilising - pick a fertiliser or soil improver from the list. The calendar notes how long it stays active (6 or 8 weeks, for example) and reminds you about the next dose before the previous one wears off

Reminders are always at hand - under the bell on the home screen.
