| 2026-06-05 | ci***** | I am the publisher of RiverheadLocal, an independent, family-owned local news organization in Riverhead. This app has nothing to do with RIverheadLocal. It was created and uploaded to the App Store without our knowledge or permission by someone looking to make a buck off someone else’s work product. The developer is using our trademarked name, in violation of federal law. We have this name in business since we first bought the domain names in 2009 and we have been in constant publication. He refuses to take the app down and Apple said it doesn’t act as arbiter of third-party disputes. He even told Apple he would sell the app to us for $250,000! How does Apple let so-called developers get away with this? Consumer beware: Bryan Carroll is soliciting “donations” and has his own Google ads on this fake app, hoping to earn money. Any donations or ad revenues are not going to support RiverheadLocal. We work very hard on shoestring budget to produce quality news coverage for our local community, where we’ve lived for decades. Carroll has no right to try to use what we produce for his own profit. Also, we are not alone. He has done the same thing to other businesses and organizations. And Apple does nothing. This fake app, which we have no control over, puts the good reputation of our business at risk. Is the app secure? Will it ask people for personal information, including financial information? Any person who behaves this way cannot be trusted, in my opinion. If you’ve had a similar experience with this person, reach out to me through our website, RiverheadLocal and click “Contact RiverheadLocal” in the menu. I am exploring the scope of this person’s harassing and potentially criminal behavior. Denise Civiletti | |
