I've used mapvault for a couple of weeks now and really like it so far! A big issue I've had with Google Maps and Apple maps is marking places as favorites, but then not being able to filter them on the map with much control. I love the tagging system that mapvault provides, allowing me to tag places how I want such as family, restaurants, stores, etc. and then filter the map based on the tags I set up. It's been immediately useful to me on outings, and helps a lot with planning. I like the fact that it allows you to create separate maps, I ended up making one for back when I lived in a different country and it brought back a lot of good memories plotting out all of the places I used to live. Please give it a try if you have similar issues with managing all of your starred/favorite places as I had, I think you'll find it very useful.
