Whether you're a curious visitor or a lifelong Philadelphian, explore the city’s history at your own pace—and see familiar places in a whole new way.

Our free app brings history to life in the City of Brotherly Love. Philadelphia is widely known as the birthplace of American democracy, but it is also the birthplace of American religious freedom. The city’s Quaker founder, William Penn, established a colony that welcomed people from a wide range of religious commitments. By the time of the American Revolution, Philadelphia was the most religiously diverse city in the U.S. The experience of diversity greatly influenced the nation’s founding commitments to religious freedom. This app will uncover stories and experiences from a wide range of Americans, exploring the complex role that religion plays in today’s diverse democracy.

User Reviews

I was so looking forward to this but there’s nothing about the actual hours and days theses houses of worship are available for visiting as a religious freedom tourist. The information is great, but it’s not really useful if you’re trying to do a self-guided tour. As a parishioner of one of the participating churches, I know at least some of these sites are open specific hours for this religious freedom 250 walk. But there’s no information on that here. Links to the churches just go to their main pages. Now I understand why so few people have visited during our open hours: folks don’t know when they are!
