Pass safer on NZs rural roads
Know when passing lanes are coming up on NZ's state highways, up to 20kms away! Get distance countdowns, lane lengths, and speed limits. Drive smarter, pass safer.
Safe Pass NZ helps you anticipate passing lanes on New Zealand's state rural highways. Using GPS, the app detects when you're approaching a passing lane and shows you exactly how far away it is (starts showing from up to 20kms away), how long the lane is, the posted speed limit and your current speed.
But how?
Glad you asked. As you drive, Safe Pass NZ monitors your location against a database of passing lanes. When a passing lane is ahead, you'll see a countdown showing the distance and estimated time. Once you enter the lane, the display switches to show how much lane remains, helping you judge whether to overtake or wait.
And what?
- Distance countdown to upcoming passing lanes
- Real-time display of remaining lane length
- Speed limit display for each lane
- Your speed (and a warning if you exceed the limit)
- Visual and audio alerts when approaching lanes (optional)
- Works offline after initial data sync
- Community reporting to flag lane changes or closures
- Covers state highways nationwide
- A handy little toggle to keep your phone active while you're waiting, so it doesn't sleep before you reach the passing lane
- Help by adding passing lanes that aren't in the database yet.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Safe Pass NZ provides information about passing lane locations only. This app does NOT determine whether it is safe to pass. All overtaking decisions are your sole responsibility as the driver.
Before passing, you must always:
- Assess road conditions, visibility, and traffic
- Check for oncoming vehicles
- Follow the New Zealand Road Code
- Use your own judgment
Never use this app in a way that distracts you from driving safely. Mount your phone securely and set up alerts before you start driving. You can turn notifications on so if your phone locks whilst driving, you'll still get an update for approaching passing lanes. Turn the notifications off when you've finished your journey. You can also toggle the anti-sleep function, so the phone remains on while you're approaching the passing lane.
You can help!
Help improve the app by mapping new passing lanes or flagging issues with existing data. Your contributions help keep information accurate for all users.
PRIVACY
Safe Pass NZ processes your location on-device only. We do not track or store your journeys. See our privacy policy for full details.
