What are Open Captions? Open Captions are subtitles displayed directly on the movie screen, no special glasses or devices needed. Unlike Closed Captions, everyone in the theater can see them.

Why we built this Our co-founder is deaf, and we’re film nerds. We wanted to make the process of finding OC easier. Our approach is to aggregate data from major theater chains and independent cinemas so you can spend less time searching and more time enjoying movies.

The ease of use and reliability of this app are refreshing. As someone who relies on captions to enjoy films and often wanders around New York City, deciding to catch a movie on a whim, this app has been incredibly helpful. It makes finding captioned screenings quick and effortless.

Found out about this service through Reddit. For something like a service locator, it really should just be an open and accessible website. But the app is required, so I downloaded it. First screen requires me to share my device location. Tried declining it, and the app won’t work at all. It’s stuck on a search screen. I see no reason why I can’t manually type in a city or zip code to search instead of giving permission to log my location. Ended up deleting it and never got to use it. What a bummer that the developer doesn’t understand the barriers they’re forcing on users who value privacy. Not accessible-friendly at all.
