User Reviews
I have played a handful of these games, and I believe the older games had a better design than the newer ones. The Older Mouse and Squirrel Simulator has something that the remade versions and the recently made games do not have. And I believe that the elements the older ones for new ones considered because they have value.
There had been a period I played your Mouse game, and I believe it is the best among the batch. The game has a cozy atmosphere, cute music and a UI that did not slap the face. The game is centered around there being places to gather food, and strong enemies that should be avoided because naturally they have a thicker hide, bigger jaw and more power. Yes, the AI is not complex, it is the usual aggressive or neutral unless bitten, but they are not the focus. The reason why it worked well, was because the Quests that drives most of the fun factor was grounded in the idea that the player is a mouse and they should collect and survive like one. There are burrows you can store food in and expand with that food currency, or a secret home location (that the player finds by themself or by consulting the map) and make a home by roaming the house and avoiding the unfriendly cats. There is no, hunt this, or hunt that, and the AI is not all over the place. Badgers are in the forest, and cats stay in or outside the house. That design is what allowed the game to be about survival rather than about get stronger.
The Squirrel came also has its unique and memorable characteristics. The UI and environment is about the same. The changes here lie in AI creatures which now has lone skinny wolves. Digressing like the Mouse game it is about collecting food to survive. But its unique twist is that there is winter, adding a motive behind the goal of collecting nuts and berries. In this season the food is realistically scarce, your family is sleeping, while you yourself have to gather enough food so you don’t end up having to go outside and gradually freeze to death. Challenge. And again, the game is not about “Hunt The Wolf” but about survival and raising your young who is treated with implicit tenderness and importance. It is overall a cute game to pass the time.
As for the recent games, I noticed a shift in focus and I feel that is why there is less interest on my part. There is Wolf Hero: Animals vs Robot. It is about animals fighting against robots which gives a sense of solidarity towards others you would normally eat or avoid as a carnivores or herbivorous creature. The issue I perceived with it is that the focus leans on getting stronger rather than any attainable goal of collecting food and surviving the next day. I like the concept of finally fighting with others, but the issue is the whole thing is abstract. Sure, I still get the home, allies and family, but they’re not the focal point, which gives the question; why do they matter?Returning to the subject of abstract goal, when this is a game about fighting robots then I think there should be a way for the animals to defeat them, or the robots AI actually doing things to the forest that makes things worst if the player does destroy enough of them (as will happen). I suggest a story mode to tie those two narrative elements together. (My small nitpick is also the whole magic thing is not what I would want), but thats me. Lastly, the UI is personally distracting, it takes up too much.
The remade squirrel game is upgraded in graphics and smoothness, as should be. Yet since its a remake, I feel it overlooks the point of its prototype by changing the goal that is later used frequently. This game is about getting stronger, and being able to use talents to take out your foes or bosses. But the family is an aside in favor of a more boss-defeating purpose. In the older game, for me, it was about survival and family. Most significantly, the goal is abstract. I dont know why to continue, when I know the bosses will be just as strong and family does not matter. In short, it is better looking, but its game design is not for an animal trying to settle down which is ultimately what Squirrel Simulator looked to me.
The shark game is something I played briefly. I perceive it as a prototype for more sea simulators.
My main problem was that the goal also was not about family but getting stronger. And the AI is placed all over without tweaked behaviors; which causes survival games to suffer. Additionally, there is no distinct specialized location for them. Moving on, I believe there needs to be a challenge. A swordfish should not be trying to engage a predator but instead be dashing away. And a pod of dolphins poking the shark should be a cause for retreat. The lack of challenge contributed to why I had no need to be running away. Maybe what happened was, the elements that are used for the fight-centered games were cramped into what m was supposed to be like the old Squirrel simulator. But the cozy aesthetic cant be there if the goals and environments encourage creature annihilation. it would have drawn more, I feel, if Shark Sim had been made closely to the older games, the older UI, same environment formulation techniques, putting putting AI in specific places, and had subtle found family themes.
In summary, I am a player who appreciated the elements of the older games. The newer ones do not cater to me, and thats okay, if thats what the developer needs to evolve. But I feel, the old game elements had logic to why they were successful.

This would be a 5 Star game if only I could use an in-app purchase to remove the ads! This developer makes great simulators and I love the others, for which I’ve happily paid to remove ads :)
