Because blood has certain absorption characteristics for light, when the heart contracts (i.e., heartbeats), causing blood to rush to the extremities, the volume of blood in the capillaries increases instantaneously, thereby enhancing the absorption of light and correspondingly weakening the intensity of reflected or transmitted light.
