User Reviews

CoMaps is praised for offline, privacy‑friendly, open‑source maps with strong hiking data and community governance. Users value offline downloads, detailed trails and contours, and the ability to mark saved locations. Common drawbacks include unreliable address search and navigation limitations compared with major map apps, plus limited GPX/hiking features being requested. Some data can be out of date. Overall, a solid open‑source alternative with notable strengths and room for improvement in search and navigation.
Pros
  • Offline maps are downloadable and usable without internet access.
  • Privacy‑focused, open‑source, not‑for‑profit with a community‑driven approach.
  • High detail for outdoor use, including hiking trails and contour data.
  • Marker support for saved locations helps organize places of interest.
  • Clean, straightforward interface and open data philosophy with active community involvement.
Cons
  • Address search is unreliable for complete street addresses and can misinterpret or fail to locate destinations (addresses with North, outdated addresses, etc.).
  • Not as feature‑rich as major map apps and functions like full GPS/navigation (lane guidance and comprehensive driving directions) are limited or missing.
  • GPX/hiking features are limited or not robust, with users requesting better GPX support (reading waypoints, track creation) and clearer documentation.

After using it for a while, I like it so far, the UI isn’t bad and it gets me to places sufficiently without issues. However small little details like the world map being flat and not wrapping around are annoying enough to not recommend for everyone.

I can get to the point of a route drawn on the map, but there is no way for me to actually select a route to get instructions or begin navigating. A drawing on the map is fine if I just needed to check train stops but useless for anything else.
