Features & Capabilities

Shoreline Defender™ is a patent-pending public-access forecasting tool that visualizes where public beach access is most likely located by combining live NOAA tide data with topo-bathymetric modeling and AR overlays, bringing scientific shoreline boundary forecasts to your mobile device.

It dynamically forecasts the Mean High Water Line (MHWL) and presents forecasted access boundaries, tidal mapping, and color-coded zones for current and near-future conditions. The AR view maps the modeled shoreline boundary onto the sand through your phone. Built for visitors, planners, enforcement agencies, attorneys, researchers, and civic tech investors, the tool aims to provide clarity, support compliance, and enable informed coastal decision-making. It does not determine legal boundaries or provide legal advice.

User Reviews

Overall sentiment praises Shoreline Defender as a potentially invaluable tool for identifying public beach access and rights, with a user-friendly interface and real-time boundary appeal. However, recurring concerns about inaccurate and changing boundary data, potential misguidance leading to trespass, reliability issues, and a sometimes confusing UI temper enthusiasm. Some reviewers note limited regional coverage. If accuracy and reliability improve, it could become a highly trusted resource for beachgoers.
Pros
  • Identifies public beach access boundaries and where public space ends, reducing guesswork for users.
  • Widely described as user-friendly and easy to use, with several reviews calling it intuitive after learning.
  • Viewed as an essential or must-have tool for beachgoers and visitors in Walton County, offering peace of mind.
  • Provides practical guidance on rights, beach rules, and how to handle disputes or challenging situations.
  • Helps users feel more confident navigating beach space and understanding where they can sit, walk, or set up.
Cons
  • Boundary data is reported as inaccurate and frequently changing, risking misinformation.
  • Data and guidance could mislead users into trespassing or facing legal trouble due to outdated information.
  • Reliability issues including the app not working, crashing, or being down at times.
  • The UI can be confusing or not intuitive for some users, and tutorials may be unhelpful.
  • Covered beaches may be limited (apparent focus on Walton County), with uncertain applicability to all Florida beaches and ECL definitions.

I am all for the defending of public beaches, and educating the public on their rights but there is definitely room for improvement on this app and its user interface. The app is pretty confusing and doesn’t work very well. I am sitting on the beach and decided to pull it up to check and I have no clue how to make sense of where I am supposed to be. I looked through the tutorial and that was no help. I support this app and its purpose 100%, but as others have said without accurate reporting this app can just lead to more trouble.

I am at the beach. Please add a simple feature. Vertical feet and estimated horizontal feet above current water line (approximately where it looks wet.) I know this is art and science, but this would be easiest to understand.

This app is a disaster! The boundaries to show where private beaches meet public are inaccurate and change consistently. The App will suggest users to trespass on private property, risking fines or jail time with zero accountability. At the end of the day this app is an attempt to violate the rights of private citizens to own and protect their property. Just because someone was able to purchase beach property does not mean others get to trespass, steal, and use it for free.
