TrailLegs: GPS Thru-Hike Maps

More Miles, Less Hassle.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Less Hassle, More Miles. Offline thru-hiking maps, with community-enriched waypoints (water, huts, resupply), instant trail planning and stage-aware weather and warnings

TrailLegs maps every water source, hut, and resupply stop along curated long-distance routes from Europe to New Zealand. Not a turn-by-turn navigator: that's what your GPS watch does. TrailLegs shows you what's ahead: water, shelter, resupply, weather, and trail conditions.

CURATED TRAILS Long-distance routes from Europe to New Zealand: the Via Alpina, GR20, GR10, the Tour du Mont Blanc, the PCT, and Te Araroa. 1,200+ stages with personalized difficulty scores and hiking time estimates. Tour du Mont Blanc is free to explore. New routes added regularly without app updates.

OFFLINE MAPS Download any route for fully offline use. Maps, trail data, and hut opening seasons are embedded in the route pack. Three map styles: Outdoors topo, custom Thru-Hike Map with hillshade and contour lines, and Satellite. Weather, snow, and booking links require a connection.

WHAT EVERY ROUTE INCLUDES Huts, water sources, resupply, dining, campsites, and airports. All positioned along the trail with distance-from-trail indicators. Hut booking links for 25+ European countries. Opening season data scraped from alpine club websites (SAC, DAV, CAF, CAI, OeAV).

STAGE-AWARE WEATHER Stage-aware weather forecast with storm risk indicators. Pro unlocks the full 14-day outlook (5-day operational plus 9-day extended) for multi-week section planning. Warning triangles on the map for thunderstorms, high wind, and heavy precipitation. Live rain radar overlay. Snow cover (NASA satellite) and snow depth overlays.

COMMUNITY TRAIL REPORTS Report water source status (flowing/dry/low/contaminated) and trail conditions (open/closed/damaged/snow-covered). Works offline: queued reports sync automatically.

PLANNING TOOLS • Spotter crosshair: explore elevation and distances anywhere on the trail • Elevation profile with data strip per stage • GPX import/export per stage or batch, for loading onto Garmin and other GPS devices • Stage Planner with accommodation search and weather warnings • Emergency SOS contacts per country

TRAIL TESTED BUILT FOR THRU-HIKERS Anonymous by design: no account, no tracking. Your GPS stays on your device.

SUBSCRIPTIONS • Trail Access: €4.99/month or €9.99/year. All routes with offline maps • Pro: €19.99/year. Adds trail measurement, Custom routes, IMport/Export GPX, Planner, snow overlays, weather forecasts & rain radar

User Reviews

So grateful for this app, which centralized route planning and made finding / taking alternates very easy while I was on the Via Alpina. There is alr a strong user base building up community reports for the Via Alpina (and other trails, esp in EU) which means there are helpful waypoints for planning water carries, town stops / resupplies, finding spots to camp, etc. And we were able to use trail family features to keep track of friends along the way. There are also useful features that don’t depend on user base, like elevation profiles, planning custom routes, weather (more accurate than Garmin), an guard dog territories, VERY nice to reference all in one place. I’m really happy to have had this for 2000km+ on the VA through 8 countries, and plan to use this for future trails too (Te Aroroa, next hopefully). Also really appreciate how responsive to feedback the developer has been - thanks Menno!
