User Reviews

Kalam is praised for its concept, dialect variety, and AI pronunciation help, but reliability problems (microphone listening failures, dialect accuracy issues), progress-tracking frustrations, and a costly paywall dominate user feedback.
Pros
  • Good overall tool for learning Arabic; users find it effective.
  • Fun and easy to use, making learning engaging.
  • Supports multiple dialects and includes an AI pronunciation feature.
Cons
  • Frequent microphone/listening recognition glitches that fail to hear user and require skipping.
  • Heavy pricing and a short or deceptive free trial; ongoing subscription costs.
  • Pronunciation and transliteration errors across dialects, with misattribution of dialect vs. MSA.
  • Progress not saved or tracked consistently, requiring restart or loss of progress.
  • Frequent bugs and usability glitches after updates (buttons not working, etc.).

It’s a really good tool for learning Arabic but it can get kind of glitchy, especially when it’s trying to listen to what you’re saying. Whenever I’m trying to repeat a word when it says I’m wrong it stops listening and I have to skip the word. And it doesn’t hear me the first time I have to say it 2 to 3 times. Even if I do say it again, it sometimes says I’m wrong so I have to skip it. It also doesn’t save your progress when you’re learning some of the flashcards, especially with greetings, like if it has 74 words, it could take a while, especially if you’re trying to pronounce it correctly. If some of these things could get updated, it’ll be great.

I was excited about an app with all the dialects but the Iraqi and Moroccan dialect are inconsistently pronounced properly. They have a few people reading words for vocab and some of them are right but like 75% are incorrectly pronounced or don’t even sound like they’re being read by an Arabic speaker, it’s wild. Like why offer all the dialects if most of the vocab words aren’t being read by a native from that country? Also the feature where the app listens to me say back the word is broken. It’s one redeeming quality is that the AI tool is great and can speak different dialects better than the actual human voices recorded for the vocab.
