User Reviews

Reviewers consistently praise Optimeal for accurate AI-based photo logging, reliable barcode scanning, and easy, organization-friendly tracking at a good price. The major drawbacks are data loss/re-entry issues, onboarding friction, and some concerns about subscription value. Overall, strong support and ongoing updates help address problems and improve accuracy.
Pros
  • AI-powered photo recognition is highly accurate and improves with user feedback; users can fix misinterpretations with a 'fix this' feature and adjust macros.
  • Overall tracking accuracy is excellent, with reliable barcode scanning and precise calorie/macros, plus flexible serving sizes (grams or servings).
  • Very user-friendly and well organized, with features like meal history, bookmarking, and easy daily logging.
  • Great value for money, especially the annual price around $20, compared with other apps.
  • Strong customer support and frequent updates that fix issues and enhance the app.
Cons
  • Data loss and erasure issues: stored meals and user information have disappeared, forcing re-entry.
  • Onboarding/setup friction: prompts like gender questions block progress and some setup options are hard to complete.
  • Pricing concerns: several reviews feel the subscription is too expensive or not worth it for the features.
  • Occasional bugs from early launches and reliability problems, though many have been addressed with updates.

Two biggest features I like are that it will look at photos of your food and make a very decent assessment. If it’s off about something, you can teach it/help fix what it thought it saw. And if you know exactly the nutrition facts on some items, you can enter it manually and save it as a favorite. Had some bugs when it first launched, but customer service has been outstanding, replying personally to each email, and they’ve release a lot of updates and fixes along the way!
