Trill: Ear Training Daily

I really wanted to like this app, but the bottom line is it doesn’t actually do any real teaching. All lessons are basically just throwing tones at you randomly and having you guess what they are. The initial “lesson” seemed promising as it started with just 3 intervals, but then immediately the lessons jump to random octaves and unless you are good at identifying by ear to begin with (in which case you wouldn’t be using the app) you end up just rolling the dice and getting frustrated. On top of the that, the UI/design is ripped off of Duolingo wholesale while somehow missing the parts of that design that work. Also, the audio (arguably one of the most important aspects in an app like this) is terrible.

Testing it out to see if it would be useful for my students. The app played a harmonic interval (P5) and the choices were: “small jump”, “medium jump”, and “big jump” (maybe it was “large”). Anyway these choices only make sense for a melodic interval. This was the first exercise the app offered. I am glad i checked it out before putting this confused tool in the hands of a child.
