Features & Capabilities

The Official MeshCore Companion App is a secure off-grid mesh messaging tool that lets you build a long-range encrypted network using LoRa radios. Pair with your MeshCore device via Bluetooth, set a custom display name, and configure your LoRa radio settings to begin advertising yourself on the network and exchanging messages with nearby users.

To use the app, you must have a supported LoRa radio device flashed with the MeshCore Companion Firmware. When other devices on the same frequency are discovered, they will appear in your contacts list and you can send encrypted messages even if WiFi, cellular, or Starlink are down. User Reviews

Overall, MeshCore is praised for easy setup, intuitive UI, and strong BLE/USB device support, making it a solid daily-driver when functioning. The main recurring issues are Bluetooth stability and reliability (frequent disconnects, requiring restarts or manual reconnects), plus missing background refresh/reconnect on launch. Some users report flaky WiFi-node behavior and accuracy gaps in battery level readings, with occasional platform-specific quirks (watch support). The app shows strong promise and design, but reliability and QoL improvements are needed for consistent performance.
Pros
  • Easy to set up and get started quickly.
  • Intuitive UI with integrated device management features.
  • Strong support for BLE and USB-connected devices.
  • Works well as a daily driver when functioning.
Cons
  • Bluetooth connectivity is unstable and frequently disconnects, often without alerts.
  • App can require restarts or manual reconnection; reliability is inconsistent.
  • Background refresh/reconnect on launch is missing or suboptimal.
  • Battery level readings can be inaccurate.

Flashed my device to Meshcore to compare to Meshtastic. There were no other users in the very large city in Florida where I live. In addition to draining the device battery much faster than Meshtastic and not finding any other nodes or repeater’s it made it very difficult to reflash back to Meshtastic. It does not matter if it is technically better, it there are no users it is worthless. Maybe in time but not there yet.

Attempted to pair my new Heltec V4 boards without success (five times). App would ask me to enter the pin, which I did, then gave a red warning box saying it had failed and I would need to forget the device via BLE settings. First time, I thought I had made a typo on the pin. After four more times, I’m sure it’s the App.
